    1. Strictly speaking, the statement implied in your comment is correct: the Nordics/Scandis do it in pursuit of gender equality, not stable fertility rates. But all manner of experts claim that in doing so they have unknowingly stumbled on the secret sauce for keeping fertility rates at exactly the right level. And now that the US rate is declining, American experts draw from the Nordics as proof that the path towards restoring the birth rate is free/low cost child care.

  1. So, the missing Scandinavian country in your discussion is…. Iceland. Anything useful to say about them? They had a huge economic upset – did it change fertility?
